PT Trinitan Green Energy Metals (TGEM) recently announced its plan to build a class 1 nickel (battery grade nickel) processing area, which carries the concept of an integrated Eco Industrial Park in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Sorong, West Papua covering an area of 250 hectares.
According to President Director of TGEM, Widodo Sucipto, this area is planned to be the first integrated Eco Industrial Park in Indonesia, known as Indonesia Green Nickel Integrated Technology Ecopark (IGNITE Ecopark).
IGNITE Ecopark will use the Step Temperature Acid Leach or STAL technology, a national hydrometallurgical technology innovation, as the main technology for extracting low grade nickel, and is supported by various industrial ecosystems, especially energy and gas, chemical industry and waste management industry, by prioritizing environmental sustainability and lowest carbon emissions compared to similar industries in Indonesia.
Widodo explained that the selection of SEZ in Sorong as the location for development was based on the readiness of infrastructure in the area, such as the availability of land, clean water, clean energy (gas), as well as supporting port, and also because Sorong is located in one of the central locations of nickel ore reserves in Indonesia.
“The readiness of the infrastructure owned by the SEZ in Sorong prompted us to move the plan for the construction of a class 1 nickel processing area to Sorong, from what was previously planned to be built in the SEZ in Palu. With a planned production capacity of 50 kilo tons of nickel per year, we hope that the presence of the IGNITE Ecopark in the future will be able to help improve the standard of living of the people and the economic sector in Sorong, as well as bring the name of Sorong and Indonesia in the global arena as the largest environmentally friendly nickel processing industry in Indonesia to support the fulfillment of the nickel supply chain for global electric vehicles," Widodo said.
PT Trinitan Green Energy Metals (TGEM) has also signed a Head of Agreement with PT Malomoi Olom Wobok (MOW) as the operator of the SEZ in Sorong, Thursday (21/07) in Jakarta.
The signing was conducted by Widodo Sucipto as the President Director of TGEM and Gabriel Hasahatan Simanjuntak as the President Director of MOW, and also witnessed by Johny Kamuru as the Regent of Sorong, Nurul Ichwan as the Deputy Chairman for Investment Planning of Ministry of Investment/BKPM, and Richard Tandiono as the Chairman of TGEM.
The partners and suppliers from PT Trinitan Green Energy Metals (TGEM) and PT Malomoi Olom Wobok (MOW) were also attending the event, as well as representatives from several related institutions, such as the National Indonesian Research Agency (BRIN) represented by Mr. Surat Indrijanto. (*)
