PT Hengjaya Mineralindo won a Gold award at the 2025 Indonesia Sustainable Responsible Awards (ISRA) in the Biodiversity Management category for its flagship program, BIO-SPARK (Biodiversity Strengthening Program and Knowledge). Announced at the ISRA summit in Yogyakarta, the award demonstrates the company's commitment to sustainable, adaptive, and environmentally conscious mining practices.

The BIO-SPARK program is an integrated biodiversity conservation initiative developed across a 196.78-hectare (ha) area managed as an arboretum within a Mining Business Permit (IUP) area. This area is designated as a High Conservation Value (HCV) area and functions as a center for monitoring, research, education, and the development of science- and community-based environmental conservation.

Hengjaya Mineralindo's Head of Mining Engineering, Dwin Deswantoro, said that the award received by the company was an achievement as well as a reminder that the mining industry must work in line with environmental conservation efforts.

"For us, winning the ISRA 2025 award for biodiversity management is not just a token of appreciation, but a significant milestone in our transformation towards a sustainable mining company. Mine management is not only measured by the extent to which we increase productivity or operational efficiency, but also by the extent to which we maintain ecological balance and ensure that environmental values remain sustainable. We believe that the true success of an extractive industry lies in its ability to contribute to sustainability across generations", he said, as quoted in an official statement on Friday (July 11).

Central Sulawesi, where Hengjaya Mineralindo operates, is located within the Wallacea region—a biogeographic transition zone connecting Asian and Australian ecosystems. This region is known as a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else in the world, such as the babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) and the anoa (Bubalus depressicornis).

Amid increasing pressure on ecosystems due to climate change and development, conservation efforts are becoming increasingly important and urgent.

Hengjaya Mineralindo's Mining Sustainability Lead, Harry Cahyono, stated that the presence of biodiversity in the areas surrounding the company's mines requires special attention and mitigation through the BIO-SPARK program.

"BIO-SPARK was born out of the urgent need to protect the biodiversity of Central Sulawesi, one of the regions with the highest levels of endemism in the world. This program is designed based on scientific data and local wisdom, involving communities and stakeholders as a manifestation of our commitment to inclusive and sustainable conservation", he explained.

The BIO-SPARK program's excellence lies not only in its ecological and scientific approach, but also in its multi-stakeholder synergy with local communities, academics, local governments, and other stakeholders. The program has received official recognition from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), as part of the company's tangible contribution to national conservation efforts.

The Gold Award at ISRA 2025 demonstrates Hengjaya Mineralindo's commitment to comprehensively implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Moving forward, the company is committed to expanding the scope and positive impact of its BIO-SPARK program, while strengthening local capacity to maintain long-term ecosystem sustainability.

"Biodiversity protection must be designed with a scientific approach and long-term commitment, while remaining aligned with the local context. That is the basic principle of BIO-SPARK, which we will continue to develop", Harry concluded.
