The government, through the Minister of Environment (LH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, is encouraging the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) to become a pioneer in the development of green nickel industry in Indonesia.
This was emphasized by Hanif during a working visit to the Weda Bay industrial area in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. This visit was part of the Ministry of Environment's guidance for nickel mining and processing industry players, with the aim of strengthening environmental management in areas located in sensitive ecoregions.
Hanif emphasized the importance of strengthening environmental governance in all nickel industry activities, which currently play a vital role in the global energy transition supply chain.
“We believe the nickel industry can be a sector that contributes to sustainable development and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions”, Hanif said as quoted from a written statement, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
In a dialogue with IWIP management, Hanif expressed his hope that IWIP would continue to improve its environmental monitoring and management system, as well as develop an industrial area with environmentally friendly protection principles.
President Director of PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), Kevin He, welcomed the direction of the Minister of Environment and committed to strengthening the implementation of green industry principles. According to him, this visit is a crucial opportunity for IWIP to deepen the integration of sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations.
"Government support is the foundation for strengthening IWIP's efforts to promote energy efficiency, waste management, and environmental rehabilitation to keep pace with industrial growth", Kevin explained. Direct Inspection of Facilities and Tenants
During the visit, Minister Hanif personally inspected several facilities and tenants in the industrial area, including the PT Weda Bay Nickel mining area. During his visit to the mining area, he emphasized environmental management in areas that function as water retention and land cover.
He directly observed the mine's water management system, including the settling ponds that treat water before it is released into the environment. He also appreciated the clear water conditions and well-organized infrastructure, which he considered to be examples of good environmental management practices.
Afterward, Hanif also inspected the domestic waste incinerator facility, which plays a crucial role in reducing the burden on landfills (TPA) and minimizing the risk of pollution. He emphasized the importance of monitoring combustion temperatures, managing emissions, and handling residues in accordance with environmental quality standards.
After visiting the PT WBN mining area, Hanif conveyed the need to accelerate environmental rehabilitation, particularly revegetation of open land with local plants. "Rehabilitation must be carried out as quickly as possible. There is no need to wait for the entire area to be mined", he said. With consistent compliance with environmental regulations and government support, IWIP hopes to carry out environmentally friendly operations and be able to coexist harmoniously with the surrounding community.
